Bakuchiol- the benefits of retinol without the side effects?

Bakuchiol and Retinol

We all want to use the best ingredients to achieve smooth, clear, glowing and youthful skin.

You may have heard of retinol or retinoids, and the benefits of using them to help treat the signs of ageing, as well has help to clear blemishes.

Although retinol can work for some people, unfortunately it is also infamous for causing irritation, dryness, redness, further blemishes and even cause the skin to peel. Retinol can also disrupt the skin barrier, leading to inflammation, and 'inflammageing'.

Fortunately in recent years the benefits of bakuchiol, touted 'the retinol alternative', have been further studied and researched.

In one well-known study (1) half the patients applied bakuchiol and half applied retinol. They found that although both ingredients 'significantly decreased wrinkle surface area' in the patients, those who used bakuchiol had a greater improvement in hyperpigmentation than those who used retinol. Also interestingly, the retinol users reported more 'stinging' and the bakuchiol was better tolerated overall.

"I have used retinols and retinoids and experienced the burning, stinging, redness and flaking skin for myself. I wanted the anti-ageing benefits of retinol, but without the adverse side effects- enter, bakuchiol". - Madeleine Qiu, Status Quo Founder.

Bakuchiol is also safe for pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers*, and doesn't cause the skin to be extra sun-sensitive like retinol does.

If you want decreased appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and hyperpigmentation, and a clearer, healthier complexion, without the side effects of retinol, consider using skincare containing bakuchiol.

At Status Quo we don't believe in using just one 'hero' ingredient, but rather a synergy of many effective ingredients, expertly formulated to give you your best skin. This is why bakuchiol features in The Ultimate Moisturiser alongside other science-backed ingredients including Peptides, Lipids, Fatty Acids, Hyaluronic Acid and Vitamin C, as well as other powerful plant extracts, to help reveal your most beautiful, youthful complexion.
